          Meet the hosts

          Dr. Miranda Smit

          Miranda, originally from the Netherlands, holds a B.Sc. and M.Sc. from Wageningen University and a PhD in pig reproduction and nutrition from the University of Alberta. As Assistant Manager of Knowledge Transfer at the Prairie Swine Centre, she helps the pork industry adopt best practices through educational materials, research reports, and on-farm projects, focusing on swine health, nutrition, and production.

          Dr. Ruurd Zijlstra

          Dr. Ruurd Zijlstra is Professor in the Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. He was born and raised in The Netherlands where he completed a M.Sc. program at Wageningen University. In 1996, he completed a Ph.D. program at the University of Illinois. He has produced 189 scientific papers and 14 book chapters mostly on swine nutrition topics. His current research program is focused on unique aspects of dietary starch and fiber, nutritional quality of co- products, and feed quality evaluation techniques. He received the 2018 Nonruminant Nutrition Award of the American Society of Animal Science – American Feed Industry Association.

          Dr. Aline Remus

          Dr. Aline Remus is a Research Scientist at the Sherbrooke Research and Development Centre (Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada - AAFC). Growing up on a swine farm, she developed a passion for animal science. Dr. Remus holds a B.Sc. from UFSM, an M.Sc. from UNESP, and a Ph.D. from Laval University and UNESP. Her research focuses on Precision Feeding and Nutrition for pigs, with an emphasis on studying the variability in protein and energy metabolism. Her areas of expertise include amino acid and energy metabolism, nutritional physiology, and the environmental impacts of animal production. Dr. Remus has published numerous papers, contributed to many conference abstracts, and co-authored book chapters. She has received several awards, including recognition from the Canadian Society of Animal Science and AAFC. She is also an Associate Professor at the University of Guelph and Université Laval.
